Indiana’s urban schools are caring environments that cultivate strong community connections for the benefit of their students and school community. In Michigan City Area Schools, the connection between its Edgewood Elementary School and Purdue University Northwest (PNW) is just such a collaboration. It brings between 50 and 60 education students from PNW who serve in a semester-long program that takes them directly into the classrooms at Edgewood Elementary. These student teachers benefit from having hands-on classroom teaching observation and experience while the elementary school students and their teachers benefit from having the additional support.
