Through a host of activities this year, Concord Community Schools’ West Side Elementary is working to help the parents of its diverse student population feel welcome at school. Activities over the past year include an open house, family nights at school, a carnival and Anne’s Kits for Kids, a Concord Community Schools program that provides educational materials and training to primary-aged students in need. These many activities are successfully attracting families to be involved with the hope to encourage deeper engagement in the school improvement team and across other academic focus areas.
West Side Elementary has a student population that is more than 68% Hispanic, with many of the students coming directly from Latin American countries. There are eight languages native to the students with over ten countries of birth represented. More than three-quarters of the students receive subsidy for meals at school.
