Warren Township’s Hawthorne Elementary School is featured in a Chalkbeat article published this week. Hawthorne uses a “learn-at-your-own-pace” philosophy, or what educators call “competency-based or mastery-based learning.” Now Indiana lawmakers are looking at schools like Hawthorne as they propose a pilot program in House Bill 1386. The pilot program would give the Indiana Department of Education authority to award grants for competency-based education programs, allowing them to model their own philosophy for competency-based learning.
