More than twelve years ago, then Goshen High School (GHS) Principal, Jim Kirkton and GHS Assistant Principal wrote Building a School of One: One School’s Journey, a story about increasing rigor and supporting students. Proceeds from sales of the book were used for the benefit of students who did not have the resources to otherwise participate in some of the opportunities at GHS.
The story of GHS efforts to increase rigor and support every student is a theme as strongly supported today as it was at the time the book was published. At this year’s opening of schools event, Goshen Community Schools administrators opened with the 2017-18 theme “Every 1 Matters,” continuing the “School of One” concept and challenging staff to do their best to support each other as they work together to help every student succeed. Goshen Community Schools wants everyone to know that they remain committed to each and every student and as a school community they made a pledge to be there for every student and for the professional educators and staff to ensure that the children know that their education and future success are important to the faculty and staff.
This post was created in collaboration with Lori Martin Executive Assistant to the Superintendent/PR, Goshen Community Schools.
Indiana’s urban schools have strong connections with their school communities. This is demonstrated by their continuing care for the well-being of the children and families they serve.
