Fort Wayne Community Schools issued a media alert to announce its participation in the Great Shake-Out, a national earthquake drill. The drill takes place on October 20th at 10:20 a.m. At that time, students and staff will practice Drop, Cover and Hold On by dropping to the ground, getting under a sturdy structure, such as a table or desk and holding on until the shaking stops. This action reduces injury and death during earthquakes. Practicing for an earthquake isn’t something for only those living on the West Coast.
The Wabash Valley Seismic Zone, located in southern Indiana and Illinois, is capable of a major earthquake event, which could send shock waves hundreds of miles. By participating in the earthquake drill, students will know what to do to stay safe if an earthquake hits northern Indiana or if they experience an earthquake while traveling.
