Congratulations to Logansport Community School Corporation where Fairview Elementary School earned membership to the No Excuses University Network of Schools.
Fairview joins a handful of other districts across the state that have earned membership into this prestigious network of “like-minded” schools. The application process included an extensive online application focused on the “Six Exceptional Systems” the school developed based on the No Excuses University model. The school also submitted a video demonstrating their “Culture of Universal Achievement.” Fairview demonstrated their commitment to college readiness and efforts to ensure all children meet standards in reading, writing and math, no matter their challenges.
As they enter the school, students and visitors see daily reminders and symbols to remind everyone of their commitment to college readiness. Students and staff wear college attire every Monday. As a fundraiser for the scholarship fund, on Mondays any student or staff who pay $1 are allowed to wear jeans to school. Last year, the school gave two $500 scholarships to a former Fairview student during Senior Awards Night! This is a great way for students to give back AND connect jeans day to college! Every classroom has adopted a college and its classroom is adorned with reminders of their college (see photo collage).
In the release shared by Logansport Community School Corporation, the Vice President of No Excuses University, Frank Nardelli, said “We are proud to partner with Fairview Elementary School. We are inspired by the school’s commitment to college readiness and we respect their relentless pursuit of success for all of their students. We believe all children deserve the opportunity to be educated in a way that prepares them for college if they so choose to attend. We believe all children can be academically successful. Most importantly, we believe the Fairview Elementary School has the POWER to make this dream a reality.”
In 2004, Damen Lopez founded the No Excuses University Network of Schools in San Diego, California. This endeavor helps to build a bridge for all students to attend college as it begins promoting a comprehensive college readiness model starting in pre-kindergarten. Ten years after Damen first began sharing this message with thousands of educators across the country, there are now hundreds of schools participating as part of the No Excuses University revolution. To date this work, which is now influencing the lives of more than 130,000 students in eighteen states, has received national attention and has been featured in numerous television and newspaper stories.
No Excuses University is a network of elementary, middle and high schools across the United States. These schools actively promote a comprehensive model of college readiness to all students the moment they begin elementary school. Every No Excuses University has a well-defined process for identifying and creating the six exceptional systems of a culture of universal achievement, collaboration, standards alignment, assessment, data analysis and interventions. In addition, every No Excuses University campus works diligently to expose students to powerful college symbolism. This symbolism is seen in the college flags and banners hung on every door, felt though the close partnerships forged between classrooms and universities, and heard in the college chants that exist at each grade level.
