Congratulations to the Bloomington High School (BHS) North in their recent state championship win for the second-level division at Japanese Olympiad of Indiana (JOI) held at DePauw University in Greencastle.
Approximately 100 students from nine Indiana high schools participated in the day-long academic tournament. The students were quizzed on Japanese translation, communication, reading comprehension, proverbs, geography, history and culture. The judges were professors from IUB, IUFW, Earlham College, and University of Notre Dame.
BHS North teams have placed in the top three in this state competition since 2006. Molly Jeon is the BHS North Japanese teacher and JOI coach.
The winning teams were awarded a plaque for the classroom and ribbons to take home. The awards were presented to the teams by Mr. Toshihisa Kato, Director of the Japan Information Center at The Consulate-General of Japan in Chicago.
