When Beech Grove third grader saw the devastation caused by the fires in Gatlinburg, TN, it touched him deeply. The area has been his family’s vacation spot, a place they visit three or four times a year. As he watched people being evacuated, trees and buildings on fire, he knew he wanted to do something to help. This thoughtful, caring third grader, Jacob Hammer, decided to start a fundraising effort and single-handedly raised $1,194 donated to the Gatlinburg Relief Fund.
Beech Grove celebrates Jacob as a local hero in this week’s edition of the Hornet Blast, a weekly newsletter featuring what’s happening in and around Beech Grove City Schools. Follow the link to read this and other features.
Jacob and his dad (a Beech Grove High School alum and “Hall of Fame” inductee) were interviewed by the Southside Times and featured in a story appearing last month. Follow the link to read the story by Nicole Davis.
